Building a Fire-Resistant Battery Box
Lithium-ion batteries require specific thermal management to prevent thermal runaway.
Selecting the Material
- Use non-conductive polycarbonate or ABS plastic to avoid short circuits during installation.
- Line the interior with a fire-retardant gel or thermal barrier material for added safety.
- Ensure the material has a high melting point to withstand internal heat generation.
Ventilation and Thermal Management
- Install passive vents near the top of the box to allow hot air to escape during charging.
- Place the battery pack away from direct sunlight or heat sources to reduce thermal load.
- Use a small fan if you are charging at high rates to actively circulate air.
Safety should always be the priority when storing high-energy density cells.
